Different Types of Skin Carcinoma

There can be different types of cancer that affect your integumentary system. Depending on the type/stage of the cancer, your treatment plan is something you and our doctor will discuss. Here are the three main types of cancer that can affect your skin.

  • Squamous Cell - occurs in the squamous cells located superficially in your skin cells
  • Basal Cell - cancer cells form in the lower part of the epidermis in the basal cells/outside skin layer
  • Melanoma - found in melanocytes/the cells that create pigment in the body/is a fast-spreading/quickly affects other areas of the body

*The following are rarer types of cancer: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, Merkel carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and Sebaceous gland carcinoma.

Signs and Symptoms of Carcinoma

According to Gardens Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, there are skin cancer signs/symptoms to watch for earlier detection, especially if you have fair skin, burn easily, or have a history of skin carcinoma.

  • Skin that looks like scars in appearance, but you haven't had an injury to that area
  • Waxy-looking bumps on your ears, neck, or face
  • Skin sores that bleed occasionally or have a center depression with itchy skin
  • Spot on the skin that doesn't heal, weeps, bleeds, heals, reappears
  • Flat "bumps" that can have a red, pink, or brown appearance
  • A new mole that changes size, shape, and appearance/may become irritated/bleed easily
  • If you notice an asymmetrical appearance, a size larger than a pencil eraser, fuzzy, nondistinct edges, multiple colors

The most critical sign to be aware of regarding these cancers is if the spot changes size/shape/color. Early detection is crucial for the treatment of your suspected carcinoma. Pay attention to skin changes. Please protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays by covering your skin, and wearing sunscreen is essential to healthy skin whenever you are outside for extended periods.
